(THIS TED Talk was mind-blowing)
(Now for the actual post)
The thing I hate the most about people on this site/humans in general is that everybody are so close-minded and unwilling to listen - it’s way easier just starting to hate on a certain group of people and often ending up making gross overgeneralizations
Yeah, I’m talking about people hating on nazis, whatever-phobes and terfs too. I’m none of these things and I don’t agree at all with them but I’m concerned because nobody seems to realize that from the other’s perspective it makes perfect sense what they say. I’m concerned because nobody is willing to understand where the other person is coming from and why they think the way they do. This doesn’t mean you have to agree with them or even condone their harmful actions. You should totally try to make them realize the harm they do, or make them realize another point of view. But there’s a reason why someone thinks in a certain way, and it may be a thought out one or a simple human/emotional reaction (like xenophobes being overwhelmed by the fear of diversity). What I mean is that they’re fucking humans too and there must be a reason for someone to say certain things, whatever that may be. And if they’re willing to listen, they may very well change their mind if there’s someone willing to explain another point of view. It’s when they’re not that ones starts losing respect - yeah many of those people are not willing to listen, but like. Why nobody cares about knowing where the other person is coming from? It may be gross anyway but they think they’re right for a reason, I guess, lmao.
Actually this is nothing new, they say the same things about criminals all the time lmfao
I dare you to fite me now~
Character Tag: I’ll go with my most recent work/character Sean.
1) What was the first element of your OC that you remember considering (name, appearance, backstory, etc.)?
I considered backstory before everything else. I knew I wanted him to be the son of a well-known, delusional man.
2) Did you design them with any other characters/ OCs from their universe in mind?
I knew I wanted that main character to have a cousin - someone who is blood yet has no similarities towards the father… including appearance, and how well-known he is (I knew I wanted to create a contrast between him and Sean)
3) How did you choose their name?
I knew I wanted a book set somewhere I could understand, and since I’m English I wanted to go with names of either English origin or possibly somewhere close-ish. I couldn’t really choose but eventually decided to say “whatever” and just chose nice (some unique) names from all around the UK.
4) In developing their backstory, what elements of the world they live in played the most influential parts?
The biggest element of the world was definitely the father. He’s not around yet just having a connection to him (through blood) influences how people treat the main character and his cousin. That in turn influences Sean’s ambitions, and relationships.
5) Is there any significance behind their hair colour?
Yes. Because fire is such a massive part of the book and I throw in symbolism about fire, and the father commits arson, (and its set in a world of elements) I chose for the father to have red hair, and his son to have the name colour.
In turn I chose for the cousin to have brown hair to really make the reader feel as if Sean is being punished for his blood more than anyone else.
6) Is there any significance behind their eye colour?
Not too much, no. They both have brown eyes (because not enough book characters have brown eyes fite me)
7) Is there any significance behind their height?
Not too much.
8) What (if anything) do you relate to within their character/story?
I really relate to Sean’s drive to achieve his dreams (and the crushing fear that he isn’t or won’t)
9) Are they based off you, in some way?
Nope!
10) Did you know what the OC’s sexuality would be at the time of their creation?
I don’t write much romance at all. Somehow this book has more romance than I usually have, but it’s definitely not overwhelming by any means. I think I always wanted Sean to be straight, but I didn’t know about anyone else.
11) What have you found to be most difficult about creating art for your OC (any form of art: writing, drawing, edits, etc.)?
I’m always like “aaa he looks too much like OTHER characters-” but I have yet to draw him now that I’ve stuck to the fact he’s disabled.
12) How far past the canon events that take place in their world have you extended their story, if at all?
Not far. For the first time ever I’m writing without an outline to see what I can do without any restrictions.
13) If you had to narrow it down to 2 things that you MUST keep in mind while working with your OC, what would those things be?
1. He has to be unpopular (feared or hated in a way I suppose)
2. And he must be haunted by memories
14) What is something about your OC that can make you laugh?
Maybe his own laugh. Sometimes he can laugh at dumb shit and it usually has to do with his own mobility (which makes me laugh real hard) or him being dorky to his friends
15) What is something about your OC that can make you cry?
How he has his cousin and friends, and yet he feels so incredibly alone and hated by the world and those in it. How he feels like the actions of someone else are somehow his own fault. How he secretly believes everything people say about him.
16) Is there some element you regret adding to your OC or their story?
Sometimes I regret the disability aspect. Because of my own disability. It sometimes feels…I don’t know how to explain it, but I hate the idea that people will expect me to write a certain book because of who I am - like “disabled people always/have to have disabled characters” or “gay people always write/have to write gay characters” I hate that box, that expectation, people have of me/my writing because I’m gay and disabled. So I always try to write what people wouldn’t expect me to write.
But the idea of a disabled superhero was too delicious to pass up ha.
17) What is the most recent thing you’ve discovered about your OC?
He can seem fine one minute and totally blow up or crumble under weight the next.
18) What is your favourite fact about your OC?
I really love how he kind of goes against the traditional beliefs of his world. How he refuses to go along with everybody else and agree with something just because the majority do. He has his opinion.
